Trainee Drupal Developer

Salary:
£20,000

In the next few months we are looking to expand our operations. We have some experienced developers already, but we want to look to the future and we also want to help address the current Drupal skills shortage. For these reasons we are offering an opportunity to someone who wants to be a Drupal developer.

And who wouldn't? Open source software has more than weathered the economic storms of recent years - it's actually been a growth industry. Right now Drupal contractors are more highly paid than any other PHP contractors and salaries are buoyant too. Cnet recently led with the headline "Need a job? Learn Drupal" with good reason. Of course, learning Drupal is not so easy, or everyone would have done already. And there's learning Drupal and learning to be a Drupal developer, which are two very different things. We will teach you the latter.

For ease of paperwork this needs to be a UK role, but you could be anywhere in the UK. The successful applicant will work directly with a diverse team of specialists in various open source software packages, predominantly focussing on Drupal (but not exclusively). You will be mentored over time, we'll take you to training events, barcamps and conferences all over Europe and you'll work with big clients and big names. You will be issued with your own laptop by the company and you'll predominantly work from home, staying in touch with daily Skype calls, but you'll travel a lot too, sometimes to London and sometimes to the south of France, for development workshops and specific projects.

One more thing - because we are a distributed team and interviewing can be tricky, we ask you provide a short (2 minutes max) video clip introducing yourself. Just post it on YouTube or a similar site and provide the link in your application. To get started, click the "Apply Now" button at the bottom of this job.

About you:

You are a bright computer sciences graduate either finishing your studies in 2010 or having recently finished. You will have studied PHP in some depth and you will be comfortable with front-end technology, including JavaScript, HTML and CSS. If you have done project or private work in Drupal already this will be a big advantage, but it is not essential. You'll be mature and self-motivated, able to get on with the job without necessarily being in an office environment. You wll also enjoy travel and socialising.

Responsibilities:

Initially your only responsibility will be to learn as fast as you can, but in time you will be given elements of projects to undertake on your own, either individual module builds, theme builds, feature sets or, later on, entire site builds. We'll also expect you to keep abreast of the latest technology, identify technology of specific interest to management and keep a general eye on Drupal contributions (as we all do) for potentially useful modules and themes.
