Managing Money For A Buzzing Charity
Manta Ray Media are a specialist consultancy who do a lot of work with NGOs and charities to help them design better ways of communicating with the people they need to communicate with - be it consumers, beneficiaries, staff, academia, it matters not. Manta Ray help organisations find clarity and streamline their processes.
They came to us with an interesting project. They were working with their client, the Malaria Capacity Development Consortium, on a better way to manage the way academics apply for grants from them to continue valuable research in to malaria in Africa. They asked us if we could build them a grants management system in Drupal and we said yes, naturally.
To keep things manageable and reasonably priced, we went entirely with out-of-the-box Drupal modules. We used a combination of CCK, Views, ACL, Content Access and Rules to build a comprehensive and secure grants management system, taking the process from end to end, initial application drafts through to review and award, with several different user roles interacting with the system. That's why we love Drupal so much. It's that kind of flexibility that makes it unique.
(The site itself is private, so we can only show you screenshots, but there are links on the left for information.)
The only module we had to write (release pending) is a mailer action for Content Access that could be triggered from the Rules module. The use case was emailing all users with access (via ACL and Content Access) when a grant is published. We will be releasing this module shortly. If it sounds like something you need, get in touch.
We also provided a patch for the Views Calc module to control the number of decimal places to display:
